Tea-Bag Mail Protest Worries Post Office

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Illinois' lieutenant governor is urging people to mail tea bags to two electric utilities to protest rate increases - an idea that leaves the post office cold.

The Postal Service on Wednesday encouraged people to make their point instead with empty tea bags, saying lumpy bags could harm its equipment and create security scares by leaking brown residue.

I wouldn't mind a rate hike if that money was to be used to fund renewable energy projects. Most of the electricity generated in this country comes from the burning of coal, and coal mining in Appalachia is responsible for the destruction of mountains at an alarming rate. This type of mining, known as Mountaintop Removal, is a crime against God's earth, and has to be stopped. Also, the burning of coal to produce electricity results in carbon emissions, damaging the ozone layer, and therefore caused global warming. At the same time, electricity is cheap. I'm not wealthy, but less than 1% of my household income is spent on electricity in my home. Higher rates will result in conservation, and a shift to alternative energy sources. If we do this, maybe our great grandchildren will appreciate our efforts instead of wondering why we used up all of these natural resources. Maybe they'll appreciate the mountains that we've managed to save. So let's do the right thing now!

I write about renewable energy on my blog: http://solarjohn.blogspot.com

I agree with you. The problem is, of course, they would use the higher rates to line the pockets of people like Ken Lay (you really think he is dead? - hah). If that is what they want to do - I say send 'em tea.
